Formule 1 is a chain of small hotels found all throughout France. They are comparable to Best Westerns of America. While they are small and inexpensive, they actually possess many charming attributes.
One main advantage is the price itself. For fees sometimes as low as 29 Euros per night, you can stay in a room with a bunk bed, a desk, as well as TV and closet/luggage space.
They are relatively small and, as such, do not offer the same kinds of amenities that larger, more central hotel chains can. However, they are widespread and very often require very little or no notice to get a room.
One aspect that some may count as a con would be the fact that they use communal bathrooms and showers. However, contrary to popular belief, these facilities are surprisingly clean. The bathrooms actually have a self-wash that is activated automatically after every use. This leaves them spotless constantly. The showers also remain extremely clean, all the time. Employees also regularly inspect and clean every facility, and there are plenty to go around.
All in all, Formule 1 motels are extremely convenient, especially to the more spontaneous traveler, because of their low prices, high availability, and numerous locations all over France.
