If you have read our review of Salt Lake City, you know that there are tons of fun things to do there. What you might still not know is that there is a pretty great amusement park just north of downtown, called Lagoon. Lagoon is a great place to spend the day and lots of people love to visit it regularly throughout the summer season. One great aspect of Lagoon is that it has both an amusement park part and a water park within.
The water park at Lagoon is called Lagoon-A-Beach. Those of you familiar with Southern California will recognize the witty word play with Laguna Beach, CA. Lagoon-A-Beach has plenty of great things to do, including a restaurant, a slow moving river that is great for peaceful floating, and several exciting water slides, some with tubes and some without. One slide that is particularly fun to do is the steepest one in Lagoon-A-Beach, which is basically just a straight shot into a pool below. It is very exhilarating and really only for people with nerves of steel.
Now, the amusement park itself also has plenty of great things to do. While walking around the park, there are tons of booths of food and fun carnival type games. Another intriguing thing is that there is a ski-lift that can take you from one side of the park to the other, if you don’t feel like walking. Now for the main attractions, some of the best of which include: Colossus, Rattlesnake Rapids, Rocket, and Sky Coaster.
Colossus is a particularly frightening and turbulent ride that has been a staple at Lagoon for several years. It starts with a long, steep climb, leading to an abrupt drop, followed by two consecutive loops. This ride is, needless to say, very intense and a lot of fun. If you are looking for a big thrill, Colossus is the one for you.
Rattlesnake Rapids is a river rafting ride that is a favorite among Utah locals. One main reason for that is that summertime in Utah is normally blazing hot, often reaching three digit temperatures. Rattlesnake Rapids provides a fun ride, coupled with tons of cool water splashing all over and around you. It’s a great way to cool off under the hot sun and its an exciting ride too. For those of you that don’t want to get too soaked, they do provide parkas, but if you also visited Lagoon-A-Beach, just pop over to Rattlesnake Rapids in your swim suit. Either way, it’s an awesome ride.
The Rocket is a type of ride that has rapidly become popular across the nation. At Lagoon, there are two versions of the Rocket: Blast Off and Re-Entry. On Blast Off, you will suddenly be catapulted up the tower at very high speeds. You will slowly decrease your speed as you reach the top and the ride will conclude will several big bounces to slow you to the end. Re-Entry does the same thing, but in the opposite direction. This one slowly takes you to the top of the tower. Once at the top, you wait for a short time then are suddenly dropped down, reaching the same speeds as Blast Off. Like Blast Off, you finish with several controlled bounces. It is a particularly terrifying ride and not suitable for anyone afraid of heights.
Finally, the Sky Coaster is on a whole different level of excitement. Basically, the Sky Coaster is just a bungee jump. You get strapped into what Lagoon calls a “flight suit” and pulled up to the highest point in all of Lagoon. You are also pulled back from your starting location. When you are let go, you are sent flying forward into a free-fall, in which you swing back and forth like a pendulum. It is, in my opinion, by far the most exciting and scary thing to do in the whole park. Unfortunately, the price to experience it is not included into your park pass, so you will have to pay an extra fee. However, it is definitely worth it. The Sky Coaster is one of the most exhilarating rides I have ever been on.
Lagoon is home to countless other exciting rollercoasters and rides, several of which are just as insane as the ones I have listed. There are also tons of more mellow rides and coasters that are still enjoyable to all age groups. There are also attractions such as a Go-Kart track and other things of that nature. All in all, Lagoon offers a excellent way to spend a summer day in Utah and caters to all age groups and all levels of thrill seekers.
