Peer Pressure - Alex’s Answer

Since this one isn’t my question, I feel a little bit justified in answering with a question of my own. How come this “elusive black sheep” is considered a bad thing in our society? People talk about what a bad thing peer pressure is, teach there kids not to give in, and pretty much count it as one of the most heinous things imaginable. Yet, we live in a society where anything different is shunned. Artists, musicians, writers, etc. are essentially considered inadequate. There are a select few who really succeed, and pop musicians are thrown a little bone, but we should be lauding these people, not questioning them. If a child’s dream was to grow up and play in a symphony orchestra something is wrong, but if he wants to be a professional athlete everything is right on track.
Historically artists have been among the elite of society, and now you’d be lucky to find a child go near art with a ten foot pole. Art and music classes are among the first cut from high school curriculum, and those participating generally are seen as outsiders. Why? Anything of the sort requires a great sacrifice, not only of the time required to perfect the art (which has always been the case), but now a social sacrifice. I think we have it backwards.
